Concours 2012: A Landmark Year for The Morgan Adams Foundation

Friday, September 28, 2012

The weather on Saturday, August 25th was nothing short of exceptional, setting the stage for the best year in the history of the Morgan Adams Concours d'Elegance.  Experience the event through photos HERE, thanks to our wonderful photographers: Al Axelrod, Blacktie Colorado, Tom Carlisle, Julie Kemerling, John Little and John Waugh. We'd like to begin by thanking every generous person and business who made this year's event a resounding success!

TO OUR GUESTS: We send our thanks and hopes that next year, you'll join us with a new friend by your side who's never experienced all that is Concours.

TO OUR VOLUNTEERS: You're the heart of MAF. We wouldn't be able to meet our mission year after year without your generosity, time, and support.

TO OUR AIRCRAFT, AUTOMOBILE & MOTORCYCLES OWNERS: You're the drive and sparkle behind this event year after year. We'd be lost without you and your passions!

TO OUR SPONSORS: You are exceptional and your ongoing commitment to helping us put an end to pediatric cancer is worth more than our gratitude -- you are the reason we can do everything we do and share our mission, year after year.

If you didn't have the opportunity to review the sponsorship signage or information in The Morgan Adams Concours d'Elegance
CATALOG, please take a moment to stop by our SPONSORS PAGE and visit the businesses that made this year's event possible. We thank you for simply being the best partners a nonprofit organization could ever hope to have -- and we hope to one day not need your support as we work towards the eradication of "pediatric cancer" from vocabularies worldwide.

TO OUR AMBASSADORS & THEIR FAMILIES: Your partnership, courage, and willingness to be the faces and voices of Concours 2012 goes beyond our thanks -- you are ALL why we're here. And we thank you for your trust, time, love, and willingness to be a vocal part of our biggest year ever and ongoing mission. You can learn more about our Ambassadors and their stories here.

This post is our way of sharing three very special pieces of news: our estimate of funds raised, auction results, and announce our Best in Show results. Here we go!

MEETING THE CHIP CHALLENGE: 10 CoPilots committed to make a difference in the lives of 10 future children battling cancer by contributing $10,000 — the equivalent of 10 research chips to analyze cancer tumors. Each CoPilot sponsored one of our survivors, who served as Ambassadors for the night. The room rose to meet this "opening gambit" and the CHIPS alone brought in over $280,000 -- and counting! It was an honor for us to share with you the real success behind the event -- the kids whose lives are impacted by your generosity. Thank you for your truly amazing support!

All aboard averageman!

 average men, iron distance -

Chris and I are elated to raise awareness and funds for MAF through our personal journey. Our goal - 20,000 followers, a buck each.

We're average...we hope people can relate.  So much so that they'll share our experiences, our website, our blog and the MAF mission with everyone they know.  We could use your help.

Each of you has a special connection with the Morgan Adams Foundation, and we need you to stay loyal.  Buy art at artma, marvel at the cars and planes at Concours...MAF needs your support.  We'd like to ask for something different.

Donate a more.  Be average like us.  Follow us on Twitter, read our blog.  But, most importantly, send the message to everyone you know and love.  We need your help to get to 20,000 people.  Remember, it's about the mission.  Once people realize the amazing advancements in research due in part to The Morgan Adams Foundation, we will raise all the money we need for the kids and docs.  With your support, we'll complete Ironman Cosumel on November 25, 2012, and eventually accomplish our collective goal...a cure.

A Message from the Executive Director

Monday, June 11, 2012

Welcome to our first e-newsletter!

As things continue to wind up for 2012, we realized we needed to tell everyone more of our good news, more often, instead of waiting for our big end-of-year newsletter. So this year, we’re making a concerted effort to update you more often. You’ll see email newsletters from us in June and September, and a print newsletter in January.

We have a fabulous year lined up—and new things keep popping up all the time! We hope you’ll be as thrilled with our progress as we are, and are ready to spread the good word to all your friends about everything that’s going on.

Coming up in the next few months:

Media Challenge Remote Control Car Race (July 16) at The Children's Hospital, 10:00AM-1:00PM. As we lead up to our 10th anniversary celebration of the Morgan Adams Concours d'Elegance, we're bringing back this beloved event to kick off both the Race Against Kids' Cancer and Concours. This event brings together 20 of our state-wide media hosts - including TV, Print, and Radio - to team up with kids with cancer and event sponsors in a RC showdown on the hospital campus. If you are interested in getting in on the action, please contact Matt Crouse ( for more information.

RMVR's Race Against Kids' Cancer (July 21-22) at High Plains Raceway (just 17 miles east of Byers on Hwy 36). There will be great racing to watch among many different kinds of vintage race cars throughout both days. There will also be terrific activities for kids and food beverages available for a great family day out. If you haven't been in a race car or an exotic sports car on a race track (or even if you have!), rides will be available for purchase at the track with all proceeds benefitting MAF! For more information, driver registration or sponsor a driver, please visit our website or

Speaking of events, I’m so happy to be able to introduce you to Kuhu in this newsletter. Her story is one that keeps us focused on why we throw all these great events and parties. The very experimental therapy she received was created based on researching the CHIP DATA BANK that you all have funded. As a result of learning more about her tumor (called a ganglioglioma) last November, Kuhu was the first person in the country—actually, the first person in the world—to receive this new treatment. The fact that she could celebrate her Arangetram is nothing short of a new-treatment wonder. Her dance, a celebration of so many things, is also a testimony to supporting new research concepts. Research that works—and research that is made possible by the years you have stood with us, investing in something that reaps beautiful, strong, meaningful rewards: children’s lives.

There is more work to do and more lives to save. We will continue to work alongside you, building better events, investing in good ideas and asking for your support. And in return, we will work harder to share with you the impact you make possible. Over the course of this summer, as we approach the 10th anniversary of The Morgan Adams Concours d’Elegance, we look forward to introducing you to 10 very special people—10 people who want to meet you and let you know that they are a part of your team, too. It will be powerful, and I hope that when you meet them, you will know that from the bottom of our hearts we thank you. We cannot wait to continue to introduce you to more and more people who are growing and living fuller, richer lives because you choose to be involved and do what you do.

We have so many people to thank for all this goodness that we could fill our very own “Book of Lists.” We are, as always, tremendously grateful to all of you for everything you do to help us in the search for better, better and even better treatment options for kids battling cancer.

Read on. And remember to plan your summer calendars accordingly—a lot of FUN is coming your way!

As Always,

Joan Slaughter, Executive Director

Meet Our New Dance Partner

Monday, June 11, 2012

Kuhu’s eyes light up when she talks about Dance. Her remarkable achievements in dance are due to a combination of unswerving devotion, natural grace and beauty, faithfulness to the demands of tradition, firm discipline and inquiry.

We wish that everyone reading this newsletter was were reading something else. Because that would mean pediatric cancer didn’t require a fight. But it does, and fortunately, we’re blessed with supporters like you. Today, we’d like to introduce you to our new dance partner.

Her name is Kuhu.

Kuhu is a patient of Dr. Nick Foreman, a researcher we’ve partnered with over the years. When Kuhu wanted to help raise money for other kids who were battling pediatric cancer, she asked Dr. Foreman how she could do that. He mentioned The Morgan Adams Foundation, and that was all Kuhu needed to know.

Kuhu, a freshman at the Discovery Canyon High School in Colorado Springs, plays the keyboard, sings and enjoys theater. She is interested in pursuing her passion for the performing arts and shows remarkable promise as an artist. On Feb. 18, Kuhu performed at her Bharatnatyam Arangetram, a traditional Indian dance recital. (You can view the photos from here event here:

For this day, Kuhu had trained in Bharatnatyam—one of eight classical dance styles in Indian culture—for more than 10 years under the watchful guidance of her guru. Here efforts culminated in a solo performance that represented her coming of age and proof of her virtue, a culturally significant moment for a young woman of Indian heritage. But it proved to be a significant day for the Morgan Adam Foundation as well.

At her event, young Kuhu raised more than $4,600 and donated those funds to The Morgan Adams Foundation. We’d like to share the letter Kuhu sent to those who attended her event and helped her reach her fundraising goal:

Dear Aunties and Uncles,

I would like to thank all of you for your kind and generous donations to The Morgan Adams Foundation on the event of my Arangetram. Your generosity and compassion will help many kids like me in this world. Your donation is highly appreciated by Dr. Nick Foreman and his team, who are working towards finding a cure for rare childhood brain tumors.

Together we have raised a substantial amount of money, which makes me very proud for having such wonderful and loving friends and family like you.

Sometimes, we don’t get to see the faces or learn the names of all the kids whose lives will be touched by the research we fund. Today, we’re delighted to be able to introduce you to a brave young woman who found it in her heart to help other children. We’re forever grateful for her thoughts, her support and the kindness demonstrated by those who helped her help us. And we completely agree with this beautiful quote from young Kuhu:

You never know what you have or how important it is until you lose it. Be appreciative of everything you have right now. Who knows—maybe one day you’ll wake up to find it all gone.

ARTMA 2012: Do You Have Your Tickets?

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Every two years, The Morgan Adams Foundation hosts an art show above all other art shows for the Front Range community. If you live in Denver, Boulder of Colorado Springs and have never attended an ARTMA event, we thought we'd put together a primer that will teach you about an unforgettable evening - and one that makes incredible strides to fight the fight against pediatric cancer.

What is ARTMA?

It's such a special event that we've built a website dedicated to the evening and the generous artists who make it possible (visit the ARTMA website). In short, it's a funky and fabulous evening of art auctions complemented by food tastings from local restaurants and a cocktail here and there. Whether you're an avid follower of the art world or just want to mingle in a studio space filled with people you'd love to meet, ARTMA just might be where you want to be on February 11th!

How do the auctions work?

When you walk into the Denver Studio Complex, you'll check in with your tickets (or buy them at the door - but we don't recommend this as we sell out every year!) and you'll be given a catalog of the art pieces and a bid number. Then - it's time to feel the buzz of the most incredible art event you've ever attended!

The studio complex will be filled with silent auction art galleries. You can peruse the art at your leisure and write-in bids using your bid number on pieces you fancy. The silent auction art galleries close at posted times, so you can find out if you've won what you've had your eye on when the gallery is closed off. The ARTMA staff will then deliver the art in the gallery to our team of volunteers, who will treat the art with TLC, wrapping it for transport. When the event is over or when you depart should it be earlier, you can pick up your pieces right where you checked in when you arrived!

The event culminates with a live auction of the most valuable pieces donated to the evening's event. Our auctioneer will guide the audience through piece by piece, and you can bid or watch the live bidding action unfold before your eyes. It's a lively time!

But is the art at the auction affordable?

Indeed. Our artists donate pieces of every shape, size, and scale. We have pieces that will be available for every budget and taste - don't you worry.

What do the proceeds from ARTMA help fund?

The Morgan Adams Foundation is committed to raising money to fund pediatric cancer research. That's what we do - that's ALL we do. The proceeds from the evening - your generosity - will go to helping us fund clinical trials that work towards putting a cure in place so that the children of the future will never have to hear the words, "We just don't have a cure for that right now." You can learn more about the kids affected by MAF's work here

How do I get tickets?

That's easy! You can buy them online - but act fast. We know many events SAY they sell out every year, but we really do. We've filled the Denver Studio Complex time and time again, and we hope you'll join us on February 11 for an evening you'll never forget benefiting a wonderful cause - and your art collection!

Record-Breaking at Concours 2011 and Friday Night Fights, Round II!

Monday, October 03, 2011

morgan adams concours 2011If you joined us on August 27, you were in great company along with over 1,300 other supporters of The Morgan Adams Foundation at our annual Concours d’Elegance event! Thanks to our incredibly generous exhibitors (see the event catalog for a complete list) and our brilliant sponsors Newmont Mining, Chubb, Decon Labs, Inc. and an additional list you’ll find below, we produced one of  the largest Concours to-date and are completely astounded by your participation and generosity.  Curious how we fared? Keep reading and be amazed!

Chip Auction Results

Each year, we hold a chip auction to raise funds to purchase microchips that can help oncologists differentiate cancers down to the genetic level. These chips are helping pediatric cancer patients receive highly customized treatment protocols and improve the success of those treatments. In the long term, that means fewer kids lost to cancer and better treatments from the get-go for these amazing kids when they need them most.

You stepped to the plate in an awe-inspiring fashion this year, and to-date, donations from the chip auction funded over 1,000 chips (total accounted for raise at present is $103,500 with a cost of $1,000 per microchip). On top of it all, the bartenders for the evening donated their tips back to MAF, buying an additional TWO chips with their donations! We can’t thank you enough for the role each of you played in meeting this landmark number. It makes us smile to know that in the coming year, we can offer even more of these diagnostic microchips to kids who are fighting for their lives.

Want to see what you missed at Concours?

Be sure to stop by our photo galleries. We are fortunate enough to have several talented photographers who donate their time and services for the event. Here are the links for your viewing pleasure – and if you were there, share the links with your friends and get them inspired to join you next year!
